The Perfect Shave

How to get the perfect shave

It’s something you probably do every day as automatically as dressing. You reach in the cabinet for your razor and gel and shave the way you always have – the way you saw your dad shave. You see is as a necessary chore, but a chore all the same.

But are you doing it right? Does it need to be a chore? And does it have to leave your skin feeling like it’s been attacked with a machete?

The simple answer is no. The experts at King of Shaves believe a combination of the correct software (gel, oil or foam), hardware (your razor) and technique will give you a smooth, pain free shave. Shaving is something to be enjoyed, not endured!

We’ve put together a simple guide to help you achieve ‘The World’s Best Shave’ along with some FAQs and common shaving solutions. If you still don’t get it you can email us for more help!
So here goes….

PRIME SHAVE PROTECT

These three words should become your daily mantra to achieve a close, smooth shave.

PRIME
: Shave during / after warm bath or shower. Wet the face thoroughly with hot / warm water.
SHAVE: Apply your chosen shaving prep and massage into wet beard. Spend a few seconds preparing the stubble. Using a sharp blade, shave carefully in direction of hair growth. Rinse the blade frequently. Once you have finished, rinse your face with cool water.
PROTECT: After shaving, pat skin dry (don’t rub). Finally, protect skin with a post shave product or a moisturiser.

Some Key "Dos and Don'ts"...

Do read the instructions. To get the full benefit of King of Shaves (or any other) shaving software, take a moment to read the instructions on pack. With our King of Shaves products we are not asking you to forget everything you ever learned about shaving, but these are revolutionary products that work best if you use them as suggested.

Do use an exfoliator at least twice a week, but don't use it daily unless it is specifically designed as a daily use product (like XCD Primer). By over exfoliating, you may actually make your skin greasier as it tries to cope with the loss of moisture caused by the scrub.

Do use a moisturiser like K24 post shave. Shaving can be drying on the skin so you need to help repair this. Moisturiser should be applied as soon as possible after shaving or washing (certainly within 10 minutes).

Do use a moisturiser with a sun protection factor (SPF - like suncream) built in (K24 or XCD Defender). Sun and wind can be very damaging on your skin so you need to protect your skin from UV rays now. SPF is not only for when you hit the beach!

Don’t wash your face with soap. Soaps are usually very drying on the skin and coupled with shaving (which also can be drying); you will make your skin dry, tight and uncomfortable. To effectively (and kindly) cleanse your skin, use a soap free face wash like K1ST or ASC.

Don’t wash your face in cold water prior to a shave. Cold water will close your pores, making the hair harder to cut. Do wash your face and neck thoroughly in warm / hot water prior to shaving.

Don’t apply aftershave to your face. The days of ‘splash it all over’ are long gone. Aftershave is primarily made from alcohol and alcohol, like soap, has a drying effect on your skin. To wear aftershave or a fragrance, simply apply it to the back of your neck or your wrists.

Shaving FAQs

Your low-foam shaving gels and oils don’t produce a ‘Father Christmas beard’ of foam... does that mean they don’t work?

It is true to say for most shaving preparations, the more lather a product produces; the more it will dry out your skin. It may feel good to have a lot of lather on your face, but the fact is that this lather is created by surfactants (similar to detergents) which dry out your skin. As you are already scraping off natural oils when you shave, you don’t want to further dry out your face. Lathering is also wasteful. That white peak of shaving foam, gel or soap isn't actually touching your face - so why is it there?
So "yes", the low foam gels and oils do work. You don’t need to cover your face in foam to get a good shave. With a clear or low foam shave preparation, the more likely you are to see (and thus avoid) any problem areas such as spots and red or rough skin. Also, if you have a moustache, goatee or beard, you will be able to shave around it with pinpoint accuracy - something that is impossible with traditional lather based shaving products.

I have spots, which I keep making worse by shaving over them. Should I stop shaving?

Not unless you want a beard! The low foam gels and oils we were talking about are ideal for you. They allow you to avoid particularly sensitive areas – so you won’t keep cutting the same spot!
We recommend that you use our ASC Antibacterial range of products. These are specifically designed to help kill spot causing bacteria whilst being soap free to avoid stripping your skin of its essential natural oils.
To help prevent black heads and other skin impurities we recommend you wash twice a day with a deep pore cleansing soap-free face wash such as the King of Shaves ASC Face Wash. Water that is 48F or hotter actually kills spot causing bacteria so make sure you wash in very warm / hot water. For optimum results, exfoliate your face once or twice a week with a gentle exfoliator (ASC Face scrub for example) - you may think this is a bit 'girlie' but there is nothing particularly 'manly' about poor skin condition. You owe it to your face to do the best you can for it!

If you suffer from a skin related disorder that prevents you from achieving a pain-free shave, you should consult your local pharmacist or your doctor. Do not simply accept skin problems. Get some help!

I have a very heavy beard and find that shaving with the grain doesn’t give me a close enough shave. What can I do?

Begin by shaving with the grain. This removes the bulk of the hair without pulling and scalping the hairs. If you need to, reapply your shaving software and shave again (carefully), going against the grain. Perfect!
Additional tips: don't shave first thing in the morning. Have breakfast, let your skin wake-up! Shaving is made much easier by giving the area to be shaved lots of warm / hot water (or steam) before shaving. So have a bath or shower and wash your face as this softens the bristles and opens up the pores of the skin preparing it for a closer and less painful shave. After washing apply a hot towel to the beard area for a minute or so to really soften and prepare the bristles for a smooth shave.

Is it OK to electric shave?

There is no doubt that electric shaving can be faster and simpler than wet shaving. However, electric shaving is harsher on the skin as it strips away natural oils and usually requires the hairs to be dry and brittle to get a close shave. For a closer and more comfortable shave, our advice is to move to wet shaving. But hey, it's a free country, so if you wish to continue with the electric we suggest you apply a few drops of a King of Shaves shaving oil to your face before-hand as it will prepare the skin and stubble and help leave you feeling moisturised (not sandpapered)!

Additional tips: unlike all King of Shaves products, some pre-shave lotions contain alcohol and other astringent (drying) agents which are not good for your skin. So read the label and check the ingredients before you purchase.

Does it matter what sort of blade or razor I use?

The brand name of the blade is far less important than the state it is in. You will not get a close shave from a blunt blade; you will be shaved on parts of the face and not on others and you will end up with redness and blotches on your face and neck. The cure is simple. As soon as you feel a blade is not performing properly, replace it!

Shaving with a cut-throat razor (or open or straight razor) is becoming popular again. A little practice with this rediscovered method can give you a great shave and really give you the edge trimming shaped beards and lining up those awkward sideburns. For a well illustrated guide on how to hold and use a cut-throat razor visit www.cutthroat-shaving.co.uk.

Should I use mentholated shaving software?

King of Shaves offers a wide choice of mentholated or unmentholated products for the simple reason many people love the super cooled feeling they get after shaving with a mentholated product. Very occasionally, menthol can cause a slight reaction with some skin types so simply by switching to an unmentholated version of a product can help significantly to reduce redness and sore areas.
What's the best method of shaving my head?
For a great head shave, simply follow our PRIME SHAVE PROTECT tips. If you would like more information on head shaving, try visiting www.headshaveproducts.com.

How can I avoid in-growing hairs?

In-growing hairs can be a real problem. They occur more around the neck and jaw line and are more common on Afro-Caribbean skin as the hair is really curly. The hair normally grows out through the pore but can sometimes grow back in on itself. This will cause a bump that can become infected and sore. Some hairs continue to grow along the surface just beneath a fine layer of skin and can be seen quite clearly.
  • The best way to prevent in-growing hairs is to shave in the direction of hair growth and not against it as this can distort the follicle and scalp the hair too close.
  • Use a face scrub regularly to remove dead skin cells and to release trapped hairs. Try our KXF face scrub twice a week.
  • Moisturise to keep skin supple and help hairs to grow through unhindered.

Following a PRIME SHAVE PROTECT routine will really help reduce ingrowing hairs.

What's the best way to avoid shaving rash?

Shaving rash is normally caused by friction as the razor passes over the skin. It can be further irritated by a harsh shaving medium especially if the skin is sensitive. As with in-growing hairs, a good shaving routine will help prevent this issue. Again – shave at night until your skin has settled down and you are happy with your routine.
Should I use an oil or a gel?

Both will give you an excellent shave so its personal choice. If you travel regularly, try the oil as its small size makes it the perfect travelling companion. You can also use them in combination - add 2-3 drops of the oil, massage well into the face, then apply a small amount of the gel over the top.

I have oily skin. Surely adding oil to it is a bad idea?

Using a shaving oil will not make your skin oiler.

Skincare FAQs

SKINCARE FAQ’S

Is moisturiser for girls?

Certainly not! It's important to look after your skin, irrelevant of your sex, and the daily routine of life damages your skin. Women have been wise to this for years - men have taken a little longer to catch up! Shaving can be very drying on your skin and coupled with weather and lifestyle conditions (yes, those late nights drinking in the pub will affect your skin) you need to protect it. Many of the products on the market that claim to be able to replace moisture are lying - once it's gone it's gone, but you can help to protect the skin by using a moisturiser post shave. The key is to lock moisture into the skin rather than try and replace it later. The simplest way to do this is to apply a moisturiser or post shave gel / balm to the skin as soon after shaving (or washing) as possible, but definitely within ten minutes of shaving (or washing). If you use a moisturiser with a built in SPF, all the better!

Is a man's skin really any different from a woman's?

The basic structure of the skin is the same although a man's skin does tend to have a slightly thicker top layer (epidermis). Men also have stronger, thicker facial hair than women and produce more oil (sebum). This excess oil can block the pores and cause blackheads and spots if the skin is not kept clean. There is also the problem of in-growing hairs on the face and neck, caused when hairs grow back on themselves leaving nasty bumps or spots. A simple skin care routine will help to keep skin clean and healthy and will go a long way to preventing such problems.

What is the best way to clean my skin?

The quickest and most thorough way to clean your skin is with a non-drying facial wash. A facial wash will dissolve excess oils and remove dirt and grime. This is especially important if your skin is regularly exposed to pollution. Massage the facial wash onto wet skin and then work around your face paying special attention to the sides of the nose and the dip in the chin. Always rinse off thoroughly with running water. Use a Facial Wash before you shave in the morning and before you go to bed at night or whenever you skin is dirty.

What's wrong with using soap?

Regular soap nearly always over-dries your skin and leaves it feeling tight and uncomfortable. It often contains strong fragrance that can irritate.
The skin is finely balanced between acidity and alkalinity. This is known as the pH balance. Some soap is very alkaline and therefore disturbs this balance causing further irritation.

What can I do about dry skin?

Always moisturise after washing your face, and shaving. Chose a light-weight cream or lotion that will not overload the skin and won't block the pores (anti-comedogenic). It should easily absorb leaving no greasy film on the surface of the skin. Moisturisers make the skin feel comfortable and supple. They protect from the environment and help to reduce signs of ageing. Also try using a facial scrub once per week to remove dead skin cells and flaky patches.

What can I do about skin that's shiny and oily?

This type of skin can be hard to control especially when it's hot!
Keep it clean by using a gentle but thorough facial wash twice a day. Use an exfoliator or scrub twice a week. Use a moisturiser that will leave skin matt and help regulate the oil production.

Should I be using a scrub or exfoliator regularly?

These are the best products to instantly brighten and smooth your skin. A 'scrub' is a type of exfoliator which means it removes or 'exfoliates' dead cells from the surface of the skin. A face scrub is like a face wash but contains tiny particles that 'polish' the skin as you massage it. The particles can be made of anything from crushed shells or nuts to polythene beads. As you wash with the scrub it removes dead skin cells and debris revealing the smoother skin underneath. It will also help to release in-growing hairs and keep the skin really clean and healthy. Use once or twice a week but don't rub too hard.

Hair Care Tips

HAIRCARE TIPS

Washing and Conditioning

1. The Reality: Hair care is like skin care. Shampoo is the soap that cleans the hair whilst conditioner smooths down the cuticles making the hair look smooth and shiny.

So come on boys make sure you look after it! Put it like this - hair five years old has endured five summers,
fifteen hundred shampoos, endless blow drys, pollution and probably quite a few good parties. Be good to your hair, you've been through a lot together!

2. The Method: When shampooing remember to mainly focus on the scalp and roots as they are much oilier.
Concentrate less on the mid-length and ends of your hair as these will cleanse when the shampoo is rinsed
from the scalp.

Conditioner should be smoothed through the hair from roots to tips, as this is the same direction as your hair's cuticles.

Tip: For extra shine, add a little real ale to your rinse water - honest guv!

3. The Solution: The key to keeping hair in tip top condition is to wash it only when it needs it. A good guide
is to wash curly hair every third day, wavy hair every second day and straight / fine hair every day.

Oily hair is best shampooed in cool water and not massaged too much as hot water and massage stimulate
the sebaceous (oil) glands on the scalp, encouraging them to produce more oil!

If you suffer from the old itchy scalp make sure you are using a non-detergent shampoo as not to aggravate
the scalp (all Fish shampoos / body washes do not contain detergents).

Cutting

1. The Reality: Hair grows on average about 2.5 cm every six weeks. So go for a trim every six to eight weeks unless you're growing ya barnet, then every 10 to 12 weeks will do and just get the ends trimmed.
Oh, and by-the-way, regular trim making your hair grow faster is an old wives' tale!

Hair can be coloured permanently (till it grows out), semi permanently (fades after eight weeks) or high-lighted, which also grows out. All colouring can be as subtle or as wild as one prefers, so come on boys don't be scared.

2. The Method: You're only as good as your last cut! So make sure you get it done right... Finding a good
stylist to cut or colour your locks can be tricky. Most good ones work on recommendation and are usually
booked well in advance but it will be worth the wait. Always have a good pre-cut consultation, especially if it's a re-style or new colour. If you're not comfortable with what they are saying then don't do it!

Tips Straight From the Shop Floor

1: If you're looking to keep your hairstyle in shape all day long, try to keep product off the root/base of the hair - just work a small amount of product into the top half of the hair, this will keep your barnet styled all day without the risk of it looking oily and limp.

2: You shouldn't wash your hair everyday (you should give it a rest once in a while), but then again you don't want to look like a grease monkey - try rubbing a small amount of talcum powder into your hair. This will soak up the oil and product build up, and leave you with a natural looking hair-do.

3: If you've got a lot of product build-up and your normal shampoo isn't too effective at removing it, try a technique called 'dry washing'. This is when you massage shampoo into dry hair, leave for 2-3 minutes and then rinse (as opposed to putting the shampoo onto wet hair) - much more effective at removing product build up!

4: If your hair tends to lie flat, wash your hair in cool water and don't massage too much when shampooing as hot water and massaging the scalp will stimulate the oil glands to secrete more oil. Then use your favourite Fish styling product.

5: To find out if your shampoo is drying and irritating your scalp, try washing your face in it, after all your face is just an extension of your scalp. Then if this feels dry or tight then you know that you are using the wrong shampoo for you.

6: To get a "messy" look like your fave pop stars use Fishfingers Moulding Wax to add shine and definition to your textured haircut. Tip: Adding moulding wax to wet hair with dry hands gives a more shiny wet look.
